Paving the way for large-scale hydrogen imports with LOHC Technology
In the joint cross-border lighthouse project H2A-RP, we at Hydrogenious LOHC are driving the installation of one of Europe’s first industrial large-scale LOHC ReleasePLANTS (RP). As a leading technology provider, we are enabling the import of 36,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year through our proprietary LOHC technology. Partnering with the Port of Amsterdam, the world’s largest gasoline port, and Evos, a leading liquid energy and chemical storage company, we are setting a new standard for safe and efficient hydrogen transport and storage.

The location of the port of Amsterdam and the companies operating here and in the wider North Sea Canal Area, make our port ideally suited for such a terminal and plant. […] We are thrilled about this new, key step, which will strengthen the position of the port of Amsterdam as a hydrogen hub, for import, storage, trans-shipment and distribution to the wider hinterland.

World’s first import LOHC hub
As a strong and indispensable pillar of Europe’s new energy infrastructure, we will supply various off-takers in the North Sea Canal area and its hinterland as well as support the European Hydrogen backbone. H2A-RP was launched in 2022, backed by the well-known H2A (Hydrogen to Amsterdam) initiative, which aims to import one million tonnes of green hydrogen via the Port of Amsterdam.
About the H2A Consortium
The goal of the H2A platform, presented with support of Amsterdam’s energy transition platform TET Amsterdam, is to develop hydrogen projects and activities in Amsterdam by providing guidance on project development in the Port of Amsterdam and acting as a representative of the area and projects towards politicians. Bringing together all the diverse players involved in realizing a green hydrogen import chain in Amsterdam and its open platform provides a road to market and the infrastructure, assets and knowledge to create an end-to-end green hydrogen value chain. As one of the founding members, we’re proud to contribute to the H2A initiative’s goal of importing one million tons of hydrogen via the Port of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam as a LOHC hub
As the second largest port in the Netherlands and the largest gasoline port in the world, the Port of Amsterdam is a natural choice to become a major hydrogen hub. It’s existing capacity for handling immense volumes of fossil liquid bulk provides a unique opportunity to repurpose and optimise infrastructure towards sustainable energy practices.
Integrating our LOHC ReleasePlant for a clean hydrogen supply is a natural progression, given the port’s logistical capabilities and environmental commitments. Located directly in the Port of Amsterdam, the plant provides access to over 12 terajoules of clean energy – every single day. Equaling the yearly energy consumption of ~1,000 households, the clean energy will go to off-takers in NSCA and its hinterland to support the EU hydrogen backbone.

Project partners

Port of Amsterdam is Western Europe’s fourth largest port and plays a major role in the transhipment and processing of energy products.

With more than 700 employees at eight terminals in seven key strategic hubs in Europe, Evos offers tailored storage solutions for liquid energy and chemicals.

H2A is a consortium of local companies and international partners, who joined forces to import green hydrogen via the port of Amsterdam.
