German National Hydrogen Import Strategy commits to Hydrogen Carrier Technologies
Erlangen, Germany. The Federal Government recently adopted the German National Hydrogen Import Strategy, which outlines a plan to diversify the country’s hydrogen imports. The strategy highlights the importance of ship imports, including those that utilize hydrogen carriers such as Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC).
The German National Hydrogen Import Strategy identifies key players in the hydrogen import market and emphasizes the need for a diversified approach that incorporates various import channels and technologies. While pipelines are recognized as a critical component of the strategy, ship imports are seen as a complementary solution. The Federal Government is explicitly underlining the parallel development of import infrastructures for pipeline and shipping.
For ship-based hydrogen imports, the strategy identifies hydrogen derivatives and carriers such as LOHC as key facilitators. Hydrogenious appreciates this recognition of the importance of our LOHC technology in supporting the German and European hydrogen goals.
Furthermore, the strategy highlighted some of the key advantages LOHC technology offers for hydrogen transport, including the utilization of existing infrastructure. By storing hydrogen in a carrier such as our LOHC benzyltoluene, it can be transported via existing conventional fuel infrastructure at ambient conditions. Existing ships, terminals and tanks can be used for LOHC transportation, enabling a fast and easy implementation of green hydrogen imports while eliminating the need for entirely new infrastrcuture.
